What is "Buffing"?

"Buffing" is slang for graffiti removal that utilizes the "buffed" look of functional masking using paint.

The implications of appreciating "buffing" need not be pro or anti graffiti. Instead it can be seen as a form of "subconscious art" appreciation (or "subliminal art" appreciation).

there is an awesome flickr group here

Why Archive?

My hope is to help facilitate a buffing archive community that will eventually publish a book of our photo documents.

TELL YOUR FRIENDS (SEND THEIR EMAIL ADRESSES TO avalonkalin(at)yahoo.com)

NOTE: BY POSTING HERE WE PRESUME YOU ARE GIVING US PERMISSION TO PUT THEM IN A BOOK. so send your credit info and any notes you have with the photos.

Types of Buffing/Masking

Three types of graffiti masking can be discerned:

1. conservative: buffing that utilizes clean lines, rectangular forms and neutral or blending coloring choices.

2. ghosting: buffing that follows or "ghosts" the original tag or graffiti so that the original form can be somehow seen.

3. radical: this form of graffiti removal enjoys a creative use of the graffiti removal medium. An example might be a buff in the shape of a whale, drawn with eyes and spout.
